After unsuccessfully trying numerous diets in the US, Jared managed to lose 107kg by incorporating SUBWAY® sandwiches and exercise into his daily routine.
Since he lost the weight, Jared has become an international celebrity, has appeared in numerous commercials and has traveled the world talking about the importance of leading healthier lifestyles.
He’s an icon in the US, appearing in thousands of TV and radio commercials and shows such as Oprah and Larry King Live and the docu-film Supersize Me.

Jared’s story has been told in countless newspaper and magazine articles and on many radio and television programmes. He has also been parodied by the likes of Jay Leno and Saturday Night Live to name but a few. Jared regularly makes appearances on National Football League post-game shows and a ‘JARED’ character appeared on South Park. Recently Jared presented a keynote speech at the White House to lobby the government to give more funds to combat obesity – his speech was the last speech before the presidential election!

Jared Fogle was a 190kg student at Indiana University in March 1988 when he noticed a sign at the SUBWAY® store near his apartment promoting the chain’s “7 under 6” menu – seven submarine sandwiches with six grams of fat or less. Jared, who had tried other diets, decided to try them out. Jared ate a Turkey SUBWAY 6-INCH® sub (no oil, mayo or cheese) for lunch and a Veggie SUBWAY FOOT LONG® sub for dinner. He ate the same sandwiches every day for just about a year.
Jared appeared in his first national US television
commercial for the SUBWAY® chain in January 2000.

Not only has Jared been able to maintain his weight at 86kg, but he has become an inspiration for tens of thousands of others who have gone on their own diets after hearing of Jared’s incredible weight-loss success.

In August 2008, Jared and his “fat pants” visited New Zealand for a 3 day tour celebrating his 10 years of keeping it off. Along with doing presentations in Auckland, Wellington and Christchurch, visiting a SUBWAY® store and interviews, he also launched the SUBWAY® School Lunches Programme.
Kiwis also had the chance to have their photo taken with Jared and the other star of the tour – his world famous 60-inch “fat pants”. The pants, a reminder of the days when he tipped the scales at nearly 200kg, will be “hung up” and retired to an advertising museum set to open in the US next year.
